What Is a Slot?

slot

A slot is a narrow opening in something that allows you to insert or slide something into it. A slot in a computer or device is the area that can be accessed and loaded with information, such as files or programs. In a football game, the slot corner is the defensive back who is assigned to cover the wide receivers.

In the earliest days of slots, there were only a single pay line and the chance of winning was extremely low. Charles Fey’s invention, however, allowed automatic payouts and had three reels instead of just one. This allowed more symbols, which made it much easier to win. The modern casino slots use random number generators (RNGs) to pick the sequence of stops on the reels, which are displayed as if they were mechanically spun. This eliminates any possibility of predicting or “cheating” the machine.

Many slots have multiple pay lines and bonus features. You should play machines that you enjoy, as the odds of winning are still entirely dependent on luck.

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content (passive slot) or calls for it using an Add Items to Slot action or a targeter. You can only create a slot with a single scenario, and you should not feed a slot more than once — this could cause unpredictable results in the offer management panel. See the Using Slots chapter of the ATG Personalization Programming Guide for more details on slots and their properties.
