What is a Slot?

slot

A slot is a position within a sequence or schedule. For example, her TV show is in the eight o’clock slot on Thursdays.

The term ‘slot’ is also commonly used to refer to a casino game, as in the phrase “I’m going to hit the slot.” While this usage is common, it is not technically correct. When playing casino games, players should always read the pay table to understand how winning combinations payout and what symbols trigger certain bonus features.

Often, people use the word ‘slot’ to refer to the physical space on a slot machine where players insert coins or paper tickets. However, the word is more widely used to describe the actual game itself, especially when referring to video or online slots. While there are many different types of slot machines, all of them have a random number generator (RNG) that determines the results of each spin. This means that the odds of hitting a particular combination vary from machine to machine.

A slot is a specific type of entity that can be mapped to a custom slot type in the Dialog Engine. A custom slot type can be defined with a regular expression (regex or regexp) to identify the information that the bot should look for when trying to find a slot in an utterance. To add a new slot type, select Slot Types from the left pane of the Dialog Editor and then click Add Slot Type.
